How to Survive & Thrive During The Mercury Retrograde (& Friday the 13th)

It’s Friday the 13th and we all know what that means – a day of bad luck where you probably shouldn’t step on cracks or break any mirrors. If that sounds a bit far-fetched, (because yeah, it kind of is), let me tell you about the Mercury retrograde which is probably the reason for all your misfortunes these past two weeks.

If you don’t follow Astrology, the Mercury retrograde refers to a period where the planet moves at a slower than usual pace which gives it the illusion of moving backwards in the sky. With Mercury being the planet of communication, coordination, logic, and reasoning, its retrograde has the reputation of throwing those very things off, and more, in your daily life. If you happen to be a Gemini, (like me), or a Virgo, then you’ll experience the retrograde tenfold as Mercury is your astrological ruler.

Since the Mercury retrograde started, the series of unfortunate events that I’ve experienced includes enduring my longest migraine to date (5 days straight) which landed me at Urgent Care, a long list of emails sent to clients and internal departments with various typos, the freeway I take to get home being shutdown for nearly three hours due to a police chase, and losing my newly purchased armband and cellphone wristlet.

If you believe you’re experiencing more bad luck than usual, here’s what you need to do in order to survive this period of unwelcome misfortune and the most unlucky day of the year:

How To Survive & Thrive During the Mecury Retorgrade (& Friday the 13th)

Back up your data.

You don’t want to lose your favorite pics or your precious puppy videos on your phone.

Be careful of sending texts to the wrong person.

You don’t want to accidentally sext your parents instead of your significant. AWK.

Proofread your sh*t.

Run that spell check twice. You definitely don’t want a typo to appear in your resume and ruin your chances at your dream job. Like I said earlier when I sent emails filled with typos, my clients were not happy.

Think twice before you speak.

Tempers can flare when you’re already having a sh*t day. Think twice before you speak so you don’t offend anyone or say something you didn’t mean.

Watch your step.

I’m clumsy on a normal day but just yesterday morning  when I was making a cup of tea, I tripped and spilled  hot water everywhere. I wouldn’t want that to happen to.

Think through all your decisions.

Whether you’re looking to start a new job or ready for your next big move, make sure you feel 100% confident in your choices before making your final decision.

Be extra cautious when traveling.

Stick to the speed limit to avoid accidents, leave early to avoid traffic and keep an extra copy of your boarding pass on you just in case you forget it at home.

The irony of the retrograde

You’ll find that the Latin root of “re-” carries the meaning for “again, back or backward.” When you add “re-” as a prefix to other words, it has the effect of “reversing” (see what I did there?) the negativeness of the action or making something positive.

While the retrograde itself may be causing you hassles, here’s what to do so you can thrive:

Relax.

Especially when things are not going your way, taking a breather during times of stress will allow you to think more clearly and  face issues with a clear heard when you’re ready. Take a nap. Hit the spa. Let go of your stress. Plus if you’re afraid of being out and about on Friday the 13th, there isn’t anything wrong with staying home and doing absolutely nothing. Netflix and chill yeah?

Reconnect.

Now is the perfect opportunity to reach out and reconnect with your friends you haven’t seen or spoken to in a while. It’s always a great feeling to catch and see how others have been.

Refocus.

Although Mercury has thrown things off balance, think of it as a chance to “stir things up” with your current routine. What’s something you really want to do but have not done yet? What are you goals? Your dreams? Use this time to refocus on the things that matter most to you.

Rejoice.

Every cloud has a silver lining. Find reasons to laugh, smile and love even during the worst of times.

Rebuild.

Sometimes all you need is fresh start. Is there something you didn’t succeed at in your past? Perhaps this is your chance to rebuild and try again.
