If you’re a Scandal fan like me, it’s clear to see that Olivia Pope’s confident and strong superwoman like qualities identify her as the ultimate Girl Boss.
A Girl Boss – as coined by NastyGal Founder, Sophia Amouruso in her bestseller #GirlBoss, is about being the boss of your own life, working hard to make your own big dreams become a reality.
As entrepreneurial women continue to take the world by storm, (including you), Olivia teaches us some important #GirlBoss lessons when it comes to being the boss of your own life, a “gladiator in a suit” and believing in yourself.
1. Don’t take shit from anyone.
Olivia doesn’t take shit from anyone, including the President, where she bluntly lets him know that she “Isn’t a toy to play with when bored or lonely” and if he really wants her, he better earn her.
From running your own business, to working for a maniac boss, and even to love life, always remember to never take shit from anyone who does not value who you are or makes you feel like less than you deserve.
Someone who has done nothing should never tell you how to do anything. Just because your boss is superior to you doesn’t mean they deserve to discredit your ideas. Just because a hot guy is willing to spent a lot of cash on you doesn’t mean they deserve to use you as they please. Know your worth and command the respect you deserve.
2. Follow your gut.
There’s nothing more that screams confidence than someone who is confident in their own decisions, even when others disagree. Olivia is a total Girl Boss at following her gut even when the odds are stacked against her.
When making important life decisions, be sure you are making them for you and not for anyone else. That all-consuming feeling that your intuition is saying you’re right? Follow it. While it is always good to consult with your closest friends and best mentors, at the end of the day, only you know the best decisions to make for yourself.
3. Know when to choose yourself.
There’s a place for selfishness in this world and when it comes to your well-being and happiness, you should always put yourself first. When Olivia was face with the decision to choose between two men, she ended up chosing herself.
Is your partner telling you that you have to choose between him/her or your career? Who says you can’t have both? You want to invest in your side hustle full-time and leave that dreaded 9-to-5 job you hate? Do it. Always be at the center of all your decisions because, at the end of the day, you’re the person who has to live with them.
4. Slay your own dragons.
Nearly every episode of Scandal involves Olivia handling problems before anyone realizes there is one. When you want something done right, sometimes you have to do it yourself.
No one is going to make your dreams and visions come true better than you can. The best opportunities that will ever come your way are the ones you create yourself. Getting shit done the way you want entails putting in the hard work to successfully come out on top.
5. Own who you are.
As the previous White House Communications Director for the President of the United States, Olivia knows damn well how good she is. There’s no shame in admitting how good you are at what you do or being confident in the fact you can do something better. Research has shown that people tend to favor confidence over actual expertise.
When it comes to being who you are, own it. When asked “Tell me about yourself,” don’t be afraid to toot your horn and show the world how kick ass you are. There’s only one you in this world and you’re the best person for the job. Share your wisdom because chances are, other Girl Bosses are looking up to you.
6. Leave your mark.
In the eyes of her colleagues, Olivia is seen as a fierce competitor and dedicated individual when it comes to the approaches used at her crisis management firm. When it comes to doing something you absolutely love or pursuing something that you are passionate about, the question you should always know how to answer is “Why?”
For what reason did you launch your own business? What do you hope to accomplish in your career? Having a better understanding of the mark you want to leave on this world not only gives more value to your life’s work but will also help to inspire others to follow in your footsteps.
7. Never give up.
Frankly, Scandal would no longer air if Olivia was the type of person to give up when the going gets tough. Girl Bosses know that failure is part of the process of success and that there is always a solution to the most difficult of problems.
When faced with adversity, remember dreams don’t work unless you do. When being your own boss, remember you are capable of anything you set your mind to.
